There is no question that the University of Louisville women's basketball program has achieved a lot of success in recent years.
A lot of the credit goes to the coaching staff and the players, but there are other groups of people in the program who put in a lot of work as well, like the student-managers.
"It's pretty remarkable the amount of time that they put into this that none of our fans are going to see," said head coach Jeff Walz.
The student-managers in the program do a lot that goes unnoticed, whether it's making sure practice is ready every day or making sure players are taken care of during games.
One of the student-managers is Walz's nephew, Brady, who is currently in his third year as a manager.
"He's just done a fantastic job of separating family, uncle-nephew, to where it's manager-coach," said Jeff Walz.
Jeff Walz said Brady had to go through the same process everyone else has to when applying for the position.
"When he first showed interest in wanting to do this, I told him he has to go through the same process, the same hiring, that every other manager does and that's going through AJ (Adrienne Johnson)."
Brady, a junior at UofL, was ultimately selected for the position.
"It's fun and scary at the same time," said Brady Walz with a smile, "because a lot of times, I'll be the first one to get questioned if something's not right just because it is family. But it is awesome too because just watching and being able to see how he does and how this has become what it's become has been pretty cool."
"Uncle Jeff" knows just how much work his nephew puts in every day, just like he knew how much fight Brady had when Brady was diagnosed with Pre-B acute lymphoblastic leukemia (Pre-B ALL) when he was younger.
"It was hard on the family, hard on him," said Jeff Walz. "It was a challenge, but Brady did the fight."
Brady is in remission but continues to be an inspiration to his uncle and the players.
"You've got someone in your program who's fought and won one of the hardest battles there is and that's the battle against cancer," said Jeff Walz. "If that doesn't motivate you, and give you a little bit of a perspective on life in the fact that we're playing the game of basketball, I don't know what is."
Sure, Jeff Walz may be the only family member of Brady's within the program, but Brady views everyone in the program as part of his "basketball family."
"We all are family and we all have each other's backs," said Brady Walz. "It's really nice."
