250 pounds of stranded fish rescued from Buffalo Trace Distillery's pond
Buffalo Trace Distillery was hit hard by the historic flooding in April, and it led to an unexpected rescue.
After the floodwaters receded, a large isolated pool nearly a quarter mile from the Kentucky River was discovered.
Surprisingly, it was full of stranded fish.
Kentucky State University's aquaculture students helped remove 250 pounds of fish from the distillery pond.
More than a dozen different species will be returned to the Kentucky River.
"I knew we had the resources here to handle it. It was very smooth. It was a two-step process," said Cole Daleiden, an aquaculture student.
The students said they were glad they could help the distillery out.
"Buffalo Trace is our neighbor. We want to be good neighbors. We want to help out any way we can. I think everybody at that time around the flooding was kind of worried about their neighbors," Andrew Ray said.
