Derby on a budget: Consignment finds for race day
For the folks at , like owner Tara Shelton, there is no week all year quite like this one.
"This week is our busiest week of the year," Shelton said. "Other busy seasons are Black Friday and Thanksgiving, which are really the time leading up to Christmas."
For most who attended events at Churchill Downs this week, putting outfits together can get expensive. According to Shelton, consignment shopping can be a good way to look your best for less.
"We get a lot of items in here that are brand new, never been worn," Shelton said. "They will cost you about a third of what you would pay at retail."
Factors like inflation and the threat of tariffs could lead to a busier Derby season than usual, and that should be a driver for eager shoppers.
"We move pretty quickly this time of year," Shelton said. "That's why we have a sign at the register that says, 'Buy now or cry later,' because it won't be here by the time you come back."
