State of Addiction: Goodwill offering Adult Peer Specialist certification across Kentucky
Goodwill is now offering a certification course to those who want to become a certified adult peer support specialist.
If you're already a client of Goodwill, the course is free to take. If you are not a client of Goodwill, then it costs $200. Anyone is welcome to take the course.
An adult peer support specialist is someone who mentors people who are going through addiction recovery. They typically work in an addiction recovery center, aiding therapists. They also are typically someone who has gone through addiction recovery themselves.
"A lot of times, going down that path by yourself, there's a lot of relapse that happens, and that will still happen sometimes with a peer support. But it really gives you someone who's already gone through the things you're going through that really understand the struggles that you're having every day," said Angie Kerrick, Goodwill's director of training and development.
The course is held entirely online. It takes one week to complete, and then participants must pass a state certification test.
To qualify for the program, you must have gone through an addiction recovery program or have a diagnosis of a mental health disorder, be at least 18 years old, and have a high school diploma or GED.
