Vacant downtown Louisville building secured after trespassers caused big gas leak
A vacant, "nasty" building in downtown Louisville has been secured after police said trespassers raided it and caused a gas leak.
Police searched the empty the Kentucky Home Life across from Metro Hall on Friday, looking for any leftover trespassers.
No one was found, but police did say they made two arrests on Thursday, Edward Phelps and Deborah Fallot, and are looking for a third person.
According to LMPD, they got in it this week through the roof of the building and caused a big, dangerous gas leak that forced businesses to evacuate.
Earlier this week, they say people were inside looking for copper wire when they cut a gas line.
As a result, businesses in this block had to be evacuated.
Now, LMPD says the gas has been turned off and businesses are back open. But police went inside with gas masks on just in case there's any residual gas that is left behind.
Last summer, they had a similar issue at the Home Life building as well with people who were trespassing.
Homeless services are at the scene to help anyone they may find.
Police say this continues to be a constant issue with people breaking inside of this building.
Codes and Regulations Director Richard Price said they will now look at keeping the gas fully turned off in the building.
