Maps show how Kentucky has voted for president in past 6 presidential elections
As the presidential race heats up ahead of Election Day, we're taking a look at how Kentucky has voted in the past.
Historically, Kentucky votes for the Republican candidate in a presidential election, adding eight electoral votes to the total of whoever claims the Bluegrass State.
It doesn't mean Democrats haven't won in Kentucky.
Back in 1976, Jimmy Carter was victorious in the state. In 1992 and 1996, Kentucky went in favor of the Democratic nominee for president. That person was former governor of Arkansas and the 42nd president of the United States, Bill Clinton.
History shows if a Democratic nominee had experience as governor in a southern state, they may have a shot at flipping the state blue. But since 1996, Kentucky has sided with the Republican nominee every four years.
