"Once again, our nation mourns after a senseless act of gun violence," said Biden. "Jill and I pray for the lives lost and impacted by today's shooting. Too many Americans are paying for the price of inaction with their lives."

Gov. Andy Beshear

Gov. Beshear gave statements during a press conference in which he said he lost two close friends in the shooting.

He also tweeted the following.

"Today is a tragedy. Louisville and the entire commonwealth are mourning and we call on everyone to share the love, support and compassion this community desperately needs right now. Thank you to the heroic members of the LMPD and all of our first responders who undoubtedly saved lives while putting their own at risk. We are forever grateful."

Sen. Mitch McConnell

"Elaine and I are devastated by the news coming out of Louisville this morning," said McConnell in a tweet. "Thank you to LMPD and our first responders for your bravery at the scene. We send our prayers to the victims, their families, and the city of Louisville as we await more information."

Sen. Rand Paul

"Kelley and I are praying for everyone involved in the deadly shooting in downtown Louisville this morning," said Paul in a tweet. "Our hearts break for the families of those lost."

Lt. Gov. Jacqueline Coleman

"Team Kentucky, we need you to keep our Louisville family in your hearts and prayers. Hug your friends and family a little tighter," said Coleman in a tweet.

Rep. Morgan McGarvey

"Today is a dark day for our community. Just one week after a heartbreaking mass shooting at a school in Nashville, we mourn the loss of at least four more people in Louisville. These innocent lives were taken by another senseless act of gun violence, this time in Downtown Louisville," said McGarvey. "I am grateful to the brave officers at LMPD who quickly responded to the scene and no doubt saved lives. My thoughts are with the officers who were shot at the scene."

Yates said in a tweet that he was good friends with one of the victims.
