Louisville FOP: DOJ report is 'unfair' and 'shouldn't go unchallenged'

The Louisville Fraternal Order of Police is calling the U.S. Department of Justice's report on Louisville Metro Police Department "unfair."In an 86-page report, the DOJ said that LMPD and Louisville Metro government were found to have violated the civil rights of citizens. Some of the findings included:LMPD uses excessive force, including unjustified neck restraints and the unreasonable use of police dogs and stun guns.LMPD conducts searches based on invalid warrants.LMPD unlawfully executes search warrants without knocking and announcing.LMPD unlawfully stops, searches, detains, and arrests people during street enforcement activities, including traffic and pedestrian stops.LMPD unlawfully discriminates against Black people in its enforcement activities.Read the full report here.In response to this report, the Louisville FOP said that Louisville Metro government in the past is to blame for the failures of LMPD."There are many factors and circumstances, existing over a long period of time, which culminated in the publication of this DOJ report," read the statement in part. "The most damning of these factors being the continued leadership failures by past Louisville Metro administrations. "Over a generation of irresponsible political leadership and failed leadership within LMPD, appointed by these administrations, have tarnished the image of what should be one of the premier law enforcement agencies in this country."The FOP said they voiced concerns about "leadership failures" for years, but with no success in changing them.Disputing what the DOJ report says, the FOP said that officers who were found in the wrong were held accountable for their actions."We feel very strongly that this report is an unfair assessment of the great work that is accomplished daily by the vast majority of LMPD officers," read another part of the FOP's statement. "We also feel very strongly that this report should not go unchallenged and should be dissected for evidentiary value."They said once the FOP has examined the full report, they look forward to working with Mayor Craig Greenberg, LMPD and the DOJ to address how to move forward.
