Judge denies motion to keep Louisville polls open longer after morning of long lines
Election Day got off to a rocky start in Jefferson County, leading to pleas to keep polls open longer. They ultimately got denied.
Polls opened at 6 a.m., and many voters across the county told 비바카지노 Viva they waited in long lines, sometimes up to 1-2 hours.
The Jefferson County Clerk's Office said the delays were due to technical issues with some electronic poll books, which are used to check in voters.
However, Secretary of State Michael Adams told 비바카지노 Viva it was not a software issue, but rather human error. "The problem appears to be insufficient time was allowed for the e-pollbooks to download the name of voters who had already cast their ballot," a spokesperson for Adams said.
With fear that some were unable to vote due to the delays, the mayor of Louisville, Craig Greenberg, called on boards of elections to extend voting hours in the county.
The Jefferson County Clerk's Office responded saying that they have no intention of keeping polls open later.
The statement said, in part, "We would appreciate the mayor refrain from telling our office how to conduct elections. We are looking forward to an extremely successful General Election and thrilled by the voter turnout."
The Kentucky Democratic Party then filed a motion requesting extended polling hours for the county in response, claiming there had been numerous calls from people who had to leave their polling place without voting due to the delays.
They wanted polls to remain open until 8 p.m.
The ACLU also called for extended voting hours.
A judge heard arguments for and against the extension around 4 p.m. and around 5:30 p.m., just a half hour before polls are set to close, a judge denied the motion.
Essentially, the ruling says the plaintiffs did not identify the alleged "dozen" of precincts affected, establish how many voters were really affected or show that anyone was denied the right to vote.
A statement from the Kentucky Democrats reads:
맥스카지노We are extremely disappointed by this ruling given the extensive technical issues in Jefferson County, which caused some voters to wait in line for more than three hours. Polling locations across Jefferson County were functionally closed. These disruptions weren맥스카지노t just unacceptable 맥스카지노 they deprived Kentuckians of the fundamental right to vote.
맥스카지노Instead of fighting for Jefferson County voters, the Republican Party of Kentucky argued in opposition, alleging that the GOP-majority General Assembly is the only body able to extend polling hours. This absurd claim is an extension of their relentless obsession to remove checks and balances within our government. It not only effectively nullifies Kentucky맥스카지노s judicial branch, it also disenfranchises Kentucky voters of all political affiliations.
맥스카지노We urge all eligible voters to get to their assigned polling location ahead of 6 p.m. For any Kentuckians still in line when the polls close, stay in line.맥스카지노
Donald Fitzpatrick with the Jefferson County Republican party issued this statement on the ruling:
"I think it was the right decision. You know, clearly this morning, some people were inconvenienced. And we understand that. I was over at the election center myself and the folks who were working it as hard as they could to make sure that the issues that needed to be resolved were, in fact resolved. Most folks had plenty of time later in the day to get out there and vote. It's inconvenient, and we know that."
