19-year-old arrested, accused of shooting 2 LMPD officers in Smoketown
The man accused of shooting two Louisville Metro Police officers Tuesday night has been arrested.
LMPD arrested 19-year-old Jeremiah Thompson, of Louisville, Wednesday morning at 1:18 a.m.
Thompson is charged with first-degree assault and second-degree assault of a police officer, wanton endangerment, resisting arrest, and receiving stolen property.
LMPD said two officers were dispatched a little after 8 p.m. Tuesday to the 400 block of Roselane Street in the Smoketown neighborhood on a report of a stolen vehicle with a broken window.
When they got there, officers found Thompson standing in front of a residence next to the stolen vehicle.
After police say he admitted to driving it, they tried to detain him. LMPD said Thompson began resisting, and officers took him to the ground.
As he was face down with the officers trying to get control of his hands, they said he fired a round from a Glock 26.
Police said the round Thompson fired struck him in his torso and right arm. He also struck one of the officers in the right hand and another in the left leg near the knee.
Thompson was taken to Jewish Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries before being arrested and booked at Louisville Metro Department of Corrections.
The LMPD officers were taken to UofL Hospital.
They were identified as Officer Laxman Acharya, with LMPD for 3 years, currently with Fourth Division, and Officer Brendan Koerner, with LMPD for 6 years, currently with Fourth Division.
Acharya was treated and released from the hospital Tuesday night.
Koerner went through surgery Wednesday for serious injuries to his hand and is recovering.
A third officer who was also trying to get control of Thompson was not struck by the bullet.
Thompson is set to be arraigned in court Thursday morning.
