Metro Council district 12 candidates campaign on bringing more amenities to south Louisville
Republicans hope to flip a Louisville Metro Council seat in southwest Jefferson County, but their target isn't just any council member 맥스카지노 he's the chair of the budget committee, one of the most influential positions in city government.
Democrat Rick Blackwell has served Metro Council District 12 since 2003, when the council first formed after the city-council merger, and became budget chair in 2023. He is the president of Desales High School.
He's being challenged by Republican Jonathan "JJ" Joseph, a history teacher at Butler High School and a political newcomer.
Joseph hopes to replicate the success of fellow Republican Jared Bauman, who in 2022 flipped a state House of Representatives seat held by Democrat Charles Miller since 1999. Parts of House District and Metro Council District 12 overlap.
"I'm concerned about the South End of the future, and that was the big reason I decided to get into this race, for sure," Joseph said.
But when it comes to bringing city funding to a district, it's hard to beat the position of budget chair, Blackwell said.
"My position is really, really important on the council," he said. "The budget is probably the thing that we spend the most time on as a council because your budget, you know, indicates your priorities. And if you're going to have South End and Southwest needs to be part of that, we need to have people who are going to be speaking up."
District 12 has 12,082 registered Democrats and 7,512 registered Republicans, according to data from the Jefferson County Clerk's website.
It remains to be seen how many of those Democrats will vote Republican and what effect the presidential election will have this fall.
