Look inside: This New Albany church was a stop on the Underground Railroad
Did you know a church in New Albany was once part of the Underground Railroad?
Second Baptist Church on Main Street, which used to be known as the Town Clock Church, is 173 years old.
According to the Indiana church, it helped move enslaved people out of Kentucky.
"The building served as a beacon of hope to freedom seekers across the river. It was a connecting point between cities in a slave and free state, and a safe haven in a hostile environment on a long journey to freedom," the church website says.
비바카지노 Viva spoke with the church this week as they try to raise money to preserve the important piece of history. Read more and donate here.
We got a tour of the space once used for the Underground Railroad:
"Freedom seekers, they would come down in here. It will be pitch dark down here. You didn't know who was friend or foe," Chancey Roberts, who does guided tours, said.
The church continues to serve as a vital educational and historical site, with efforts underway to ensure its preservation for future generations.
