The World Monuments Fund is fighting to preserve 20 historical sites in Alabama. The New York City-based nonprofit group helps save historical architecture around the world through education, funding and training. Since then, the site has been home to civic clubs, an active kitchen and more.The Brown Chapel served as the starting point for three Selma to Montgomery marches in 1965.This includes the Bloody Sunday March, when about 550 protesters took to U.S. Highway 80. Some were brutally beaten by state troopers and retreated to the chapel. Seventeen people were hospitalized.
