Todd Sturgeon steps down as Floyd Central boys basketball coach
After returning Floyd Central boys basketball back to prominence, Todd Sturgeon has decided to resign as head coach.
Some might find it interesting to see Sturgeon step down while he's still at the top of his game.
He won 142 games and just 45 losses with a pair of sectional titles, including the program's first in 31 years.
But the 57-year-old feels now is right time.
"Ultimately, looking ahead at what's best for the program," he said. "I just felt like over the next two-three years, the program would be in a better place if we got somebody new who's excited, enthusiastic, pistols blazing, and ready to come in and take the program to another level, hopefully."
Sturgeon has been around the long enough to know anything is possible, so he doesn't rule out a return to the bench.
"I'm hesitant to use the word retire," he said. "When I got out of college coaching (at the University of Indianapolis), I used that word and then life has a funny way of twisting and turning.
"I'm going to continue to teach for the foreseeable future. I don't have plans to get back into coaching, but who knows."
