When asked by reporters about Thursday's Florida State University shooting that left two men dead and at least six others hurt, President Donald Trump called the situation "a shame" and "horrible," but suggested he would not advocate for new gun legislation.
Speaking inside the Oval Office, the president said he had been fully briefed on the shooting while emphasizing his role as a defender of the Second Amendment.
"These things are terrible, but the gun doesn't do the shooting, the people do," Trump said. "As far as legislation is concerned, this has been going on for a long time. I have an obligation to protect the Second Amendment."
The president has characterized himself as "the best friend gun owners have ever had in the White House." He called on gun owners to support him in the 2024 election after receiving a full endorsement from the National Rifle Association during one of the deadliest years for mass shootings on record.
But before the NRA's endorsement, Trump had said he would stand up to them and address gun violence, only to later backpedal on the comments, saying there was "not much political support."
