Hundreds of UofL students, staff volunteer in honor of MLK Day
The University of Louisville didn't have classes on Monday, so some students and staff used the holiday to celebrate the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.
About 25 students volunteered at "Love the Hungry" on Fern Valley Road.
The students helped pack nutritious meals that will be given to children.
"I think one thing that the students at the University of Louisville begin to understand is that it's bigger than you," said UofL vice president for community engagement Douglas Craddock. "So you have the opportunity to serve and do work outside of yourself; it really illustrates a kind of sustainable approach to the world that we should be living in. So these students here, the students all across campus really realize the importance of the community and the impact that it can have day in and day out by service opportunities such as this."
In all, more than 300 students, faculty, and staff took part in service projects around the city.
