UofL, UK basketball both inside top 10 of ESPN's 'way-too-early' rankings
The NCAA basketball season just ended Monday, and the next is more than six months away, but some incredibly early rankings have been released by and they have both Louisville and Kentucky making it inside the top 10.
ESPN's list has Louisville at the No. 3 spot and Kentucky at the No. 6 spot.

Houston, which lost Monday night to Florida in the championship, claimed the No. 1 spot. Purdue came in at the No. 2, while UConn and Michigan were slotted in the No. 4 and No. 5 spots, respectively.
The latest NCAA champions, Florida, came in at No. 19.
How the "Way-Too-Early Top 25" rankings work according to ESPN:
- Any player ranked in the top 50 of ESPN's 2025 NBA draft rankings is considered a departure. For now, at least. Obviously, we will adjust a team's ranking should that player opt to return to school. (There is one exception: Michigan's Yaxel Lendeborg, who just transferred from UAB. If a projected draft pick commits to another school, we're factoring him into the ranking.)
- Players not ranked in the top 50 are included as returnees -- unless they've already announced their intention to leave school and turn pro.
- Players who have another year of eligibility because of the juco waiver (announced in December) are considered to be returning, until announced otherwise.
Louisville and Pat Kelsey had a busy week last week, landing three commits in the transfer portal: Ryan Conwell (Xavier), Isaac McKneely (Virginia), and Adrian Wooley (Kennesaw State). They will be joining 5-star guard Mikel Brown Jr. in filling out the Cardinals' roster next season. J'Vonne Hadley will also be returning and the Cardinals are hopeful that Kasean Pryor returns as well for a run at next year's national championship.
As for Mark Pope and Kentucky, they've also landed three players in the transfer portal: Jaland Lowe (Pitt), Kam Williams (Tulane), and Mouhamed Dioubate (Alabama). Kentucky is also bringing in 5- and 4-star recruits Jasper Johnson, Acaden Lewis, and Malachi Moreno. Pope and the Wildcats are also waiting to see if Otega Oweh and Brandon Garrison return for next season.
ESPN's list dropped Tuesday morning before it was announced that Jayden Quaintance was committing to Kentucky. The 5-star recruit committed to Kentucky last season before former head coach John Calipari left for Arkansas. With this in mind, it's safe to say Kentucky may have landed higher on the rankings.
