Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear's veto of House Bill 4, which bans diversity, equity, and inclusion programs on college campuses, has been overridden by lawmakers. Beshear vetoed the bill last week, saying that diversity is a strength in the Commonwealth.HB 4, sponsored by 25 Republicans, eliminates DEI offices and training programs at public colleges and universities in Kentucky, along with any policies promoting "differential treatment."The bill was easily overridden by lawmakers on Thursday by a wide margin, 79-19.The sponsors of the bill have said that DEI programs are unconstitutional and wasteful.Colleges and universities will have until June 30 to comply with the bill now that it has been signed into law.
