More juveniles could be tried as adults under bill nearing final passage in Frankfort
Juveniles accused of felonies involving the use of a gun would be automatically tried as adults under a bill that passed out of committee on Wednesday in Frankfort.
The House judiciary committee voted to recommend favorable passage of Senate Bill 20, with all the Democrats on the committee voting against it.
The bill could receive final passage on the House floor as early as Monday.
Supporters of the bill say minors are often quickly released from custody after committing violent crimes, creating a perception there are no consequences for violence or illegal behavior.
Critics argue lawmakers should focus more on reducing access to guns and addressing the root causes of crime. They also fear the legislation could increase the population of Kentucky's already strained juvenile detention centers.
