LMPD Officer Nick Wilt making more progress, able to walk semi-independently amid recovery
Louisville Metro Police Department Officer Nick Wilt is showing more signs of good progress after being shot in the head at Old National Bank last year.
Wilt was one of the first responders on the scene of the mass shooting on April 10. He was shot in the head as he rushed up the steps of the bank toward the gunman.
Since then, Wilt has been through extensive surgery and rehab to recover from the shooting. He was released from the hospital last July to continue his recovery at home.
In an update from Wilt's family on Wednesday, they say he's making "encouraging progress in his recovery at home.
"Recent developments show Officer Wilt's gradual increase in overall life skills, like brushing his teeth and walking to the kitchen to get his plate of food, shows signs of starting towards semi-independence," read part of an update from Wilt's family. "Semi-independence will still be a long way away. He engages in coherent conversations easily; some days are better than others. He displays an increasing initiative in expressing his needs, including hunger and if he wants to do something else."
His family says he's been on a therapeutic break since mid-January so he can rest and let his brain recuperate.
He has also been able to walk semi-independently with a cane while focusing on muscle flexibility and endurance. They say he's having challenges with his left arm, as movement is limited.
A spinal tap is planned to get rid of the buildup and assess its change in cognitive and physical functions.
