An officer who was critically hurt responding to a mass shooting downtown Louisville had only been on the job for days.
Nickolas Wilt, 26, is in critical condition at UofL Hospital after a gunman opened fire Monday morning inside Old National Bank on Main Street.
Police said Wilt was one of two officers who were hurt responding to the shooting. Wilt was shot in the head and had to get emergency brain surgery.
"[He] ran towards the gunfire today to save lives," LMPD tweeted.
In an interview early Tuesday morning, LMPD Interim Chief of Police Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel said that his condition was stable and that he was looking better. He is still listed as critical at this time.
LMPD said he graduated from the academy just days ago on March 31.
Both Mayor Craig Greenberg and interim LMPD Chief Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel were there for his swearing-in ceremony.
In addition to being an officer, Wilt has worked for La Grange Fire and Rescue and Oldham County EMS.
The LMPD Foundation has set up a fund for him and his family. .
Wilt was a graduate of Oldham County High School in 2016.
Police said that of the eight people injured, at least three are officers.
One of them is Officer Cory Galloway. He and Wilt were the first to respond.
LMPD said that Galloway is the one who fired the shots that killed the suspect.
In all, five people died. At least two were critically injured, two have less severe injuries and four have already been treated and released.
